What are the main errors or limitations of
the
magnetic compass during flight? /
Explain the acceleration error and turning
error.
The errors are best remembered by the acronym “ANDS”:
(1)
A - Acceleration/Deceleration Error: In the Northern Hemisphere, accelerating in level flight causes a false turn indication north; deceleration causes a false indication south. (Reversed in the Southern Hemisphere). Most pronounced on east/west headings.
(2)
N - Northerly Turning Error: When turning away from a northerly heading, the compass lags (indicates a turn slower than actual).
(3)
D - Southerly Turning Error: When turning away from a southerly heading, the compass leads (indicates a turn faster than actual).
(4)
S - Oscillation/Swirling Error: Due to magnetic dip, the compass card tilts and swings during bank or pitch changes, making it unstable and hard to read in turbulence or during maneuvers
